About Lena

My name is Lena. I am a senior in high school and next year will be studying biology/zoology at university. I am hugely passionate about books, science and the marriage of the two; most of what I read is science-related nonfiction and books in which nature and a sense of place play a central role. My all-time favorite books- so far!- are Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer and Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner. I also love the classics of American environmental literature, and books by many of the science writers of today: Edward O. Wilson, Robert Sapolsky, Wallace Stegner, Rachel Carson, Jane Goodall, Gretel Ehrlich, and books written by my dad- Bernd Heinrich - whose passion for science and science communication has shaped my own. My mother is also a science/nonfiction author. Of course, my parents, as well as teachers along the way, have been hugely influential in my passion for books and in my belief in their power to teach empathy, both towards our fellow humans and towards the more-than-human world.
